Oscars 2018: A Brief History of Tiffany Haddish Fawning Over Meryl Streep

Celebrities

Everyone loves Meryl Streep, but no one has made that love a part of their brand quite like Tiffany Haddish. The Girls Trip star, who has had a breakout year after the comedy became a certified blockbuster last summer, has mentioned Streep at nearly every turn. “Putting it out there for Meryl Streep to be my mom in Girls Trip 2,” she told Vanity Fairlast July. She’s made that plea about a million times since—and, on Sunday night, even got to make it on stage at the Academy Awards.

“I want you to be my mama one day,” Haddish said to Streep from the podium, while presenting an award with Maya Rudolph. “Let’s get this money, girl!”

The camera then panned to Streep, who was clapping and laughing from the audience. It was Haddish’s second encounter with Streep of the night. While walking the red carpet earlier that evening, Haddish happened to see Streep making her way into the theater. She made a beeline straight for the Oscar winner, hopping over the rope, giving her a hug, and sending her off with a quick curtsy.

The moment was the culmination of Haddish’s months-long plan to meet Streep. “Meryl better bring her best security, because I’m hunting her down,” she told V.F.in January. “I’m showing up, and I’m gonna be right there like, ‘Meryl, you have played all of these roles—but you never been my mama.’ I’m gonna pitch her all these different ideas I’ve got for her to be my mama.”

She also praised Streep in another January interview with V.F., saying that, along with the Girls Trip sequel, she would also want to do a Gidget remake with the movie star playing her adoptive mother.

In a December interview with GQ, Haddish reiterated her love for Streep, once again telling the universe that she wants her to play her mom in a movie one day. “I hope I don’t sound too crazy, girl,” she added.

In an interview with Mashable, Haddish kept the trend going, saying that not only does she love Streep, she’d like to be like her one day. “I’m so happy the world is finally being exposed to [my work],” she said. “I can’t wait for them to see The Last O.G. and see Face Value and all these other shows that I’ve got coming and more movies where they can go, ‘Wow, this girl is versatile. She’s the black Meryl Streep.’ And then Meryl Streep will be in a movie with me and she’ll play my mom and it’ll be crazy! Then Meryl Streep will be my best friend and Whoopi Goldberg can be my auntie.”

As it is written, so it shall be—your move, Streep!
