The singer is reported to have died of a heart attack, with the Austin Chronicle reporting that his health had been deteriorating in recent years.

His sister Margy Johnston revealed last year that he had spent time in hospital and had had adjustments to his medication.

Johnston battled with both mental and physical health issues during his life, having been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

He suffered a manic psychotic episode in the early 1990s when, while believing he was cartoon character Casper The Friendly Ghost during a plane flight, he threw the planes ignition keys out of the window.

That led to him spending time in a psychiatric institution, while his mental health issues also led to a long break between him releasing new music.

Johnston also suffered from diabetes, hydrocephalus and kidney infections during his life.

What are Daniel Johnstons best-known songs and how did his career start?

Johnston became popular as a songwriter after he began handing out tapes of his music to people on the streets of Austin.

He went on to release 17 albums during his career, including three home-recorded tapes in 1983 – More Songs Of Pain, Yip/Jump Music and Hi, How Are You.

His most recent album, Space Ducks, was released in 2012 and he delivered his final tour in 2017.

He revealed back in April that he had been working on a new album, suggesting it would be titled If.
