Ross Barton is heading out of Emmerdale as Mike Parrs final scenes after five years air this week – and the actor has admitted that his departure feels like a painful break-up. However, he is not ruling out a return to the show in the future.

Viewers have seen Ross make the decision to start a new life away from the village with his girlfriend Rebecca White but their plans to take children Moses and Seb with them cause a stir with Robert Sugden and Charity Dingle.

As they meet with conflict from them, Rebecca decides that she cant go through with it and insists to Ross that they give it a few months so everyone can decide on whats best. But his mind is made up – he wants out of Emmerdale and so will instead go alone.

Speaking about the scenes, Mike explained: Ross and Rebecca are more aware that Robert and Aaron are going to protest about them leaving with the kids. I think Ross – maybe narrow-mindedly, maybe reasonably – thought that Charity would be willing to let Moses go, because shes a bit of a crap mum, if you will!

But shes turned a corner because Ryan has turned up and shes now trying to correct the mistakes from her younger years. Its a bit weird actually, because Ross is saying he should have parental responsibility because hes raised Moses, but then Rebecca is saying that she should have parental responsibility even though Robert has taken Seb. So it gets very complicated.

After Ross takes the decision to go, he says his goodbyes and tells Rebecca that he needs this clean break but they can have a long distance relationship. But Mike admits that he is actually devastated at the prospect of Rebecca not being with him.

He sighed: Hed be gutted if Rebecca stayed behind. He wants to play happy families. Its a massive opportunity for him to turn away from his bad boy ways and go clean and straight. Hed like to do that with the girl that he loves.

Whatever happens between Ross and Rebecca, there are clearly exciting times ahead for Mike as he strives to live the American dream. But his new journey is tinged with the sadness of leaving Emmerdale.

He added: Its a mixed bag of anxiety, and happiness because there are other avenues that I want to explore. It sounds like a cliché, but I feel like Im breaking up with Emmerdale and its very sad! So its sad ultimately but its definitely the right decision for me at this time in my life. Im flying to LA and Ive got a few other friends out there.

Ive had the best five years here. The opportunities that this job has given me to see the world, and help friends and family, have been amazing. Im going to take the plunge and become a desperate dole-y actor again but hopefully I can come back and do a little bit more. If I get killed off-screen, youll know Ive annoyed somebody somewhere!
