Chelsea will offer Eden Hazard the opportunity to become the highest paid player in the history of the Premier League as they prepare to restart contract talks, according to reports.

The Belgian’s current deal does not expire until 2020, though he has been attracting interest from both Spanish giants Real Madrid and former boss Jose Mourinho at Manchester United.

Fears increased this week that Hazard might leave Stamford Bridge after his father, Thierry, told Belgian newspaper Le Soir that he had rejected fresh terms at Chelsea and was awaiting an approach from Real Madrid.

But, according to The Telegraph, no formal offer was ever made – though negotiations have taken place – and the club intend to ramp up talks in the New Year.

Chelsea have no intention of letting Hazard leave – least of all to a Premier League rival like United – and are preparing a lucrative offer that would make him both the highest paid player in the club’s history and the best paid player in England.

Hazard currently earns £150,000-per-week, but Chelsea will double his weekly salary to £300,000 – a figure that eclipses the £290,000 currently earned by United star Paul Pogba.

Hazard’s countryman and teammate Thibaut Courtois is also engulfed by transfer rumours, with his contract expiring in 2019, and he could become the highest paid goalkeeper in the world as Antonio Conte looks to lock down his top talent.

Speaking on Friday, the Italian said: ‘If you are in a great club and you trust the ambition of the club, it’s right to stay. We are talking about two important players for us.

‘For sure, it is important to continue with this type of player, especially if your ambition is to try and compete for something important.

‘It’s very important to try to improve your team, to strengthen your team, and not to sell the best players. But [on Hazard’s new contract] these are private conversations between the player and the club.’
